Ellen Schwartz - ICRF Woman of Action!

On April 14, 2008, ICRF celebrated their 7th Annual Women of Action Luncheon where they recognized the achievements of extraordinary women in the business, health sciences and philanthropy sectors. This year our very own Ellen Schwartz, Co-Founder of Jacob's Ladder, Canadian Foundation of Control of Neurodegenerative Disease was one of the honorees! Ellen spoke beautifully of the Lessons from Jacob, her personal growth as the Mother of a disabled child and the richness Jacob has brought to her life, the lives of her entire family and all who know him. It was an outstanding event celebrating four outstanding women.

Lessons for Life!

Lessons From Jacob

Do you ever wonder how families like the Schwartz' cope with the news that a child has been born with a debilitating disease? Ever wonder how you would manage on a day to day basis? Ever wonder about dealing with the negatives of the circumstances handed to you and yes, ever wonder about all the positives that come from such a personal challenge?

Now you are able to learn how one mother coped, carried on and grew through an experience no parent would choose. Our very own Ellen Schwartz, mother of the indomitable Jacob, has told her story in "Lessons from Jacob".

Don't miss it! In book stores everywhere as of October 3rd, 2006 for $26.99 with partial proceeds going to Jacob's Ladder to help raise awareness, conduct research and work towards a cure for neurodegenerative disease.

In bookstores across Canada or online through Indigo.

3rd Party Events

Hands-on Helping! - Jacob’s Ladder has always been extremely fortunate to have outstanding supporters within our community who initiate, develop and run independent events and donate the proceeds to support our programs. Every contribution, large or small, makes a difference and is greatly appreciated with our heartfelt thanks. If you or your group would like to become Jacob’s Ladder 3 rd party event planners, please contact us at 416-485-0078.

Climbing Higher and Higher to a Cure – Hillcrest Progressive School again supported Jacob’s Ladder through their fabulous annual Climb-a-thon. Queenie Spindel, her staff and all the children and families of Hillcrest raised an incredible $6,000! We can’t thank them enough for their on-going dedication to Jacob’s Ladder.

Several Bar and Bat Mitzvahs included donations to Jacob’s Ladder as part of their coming of age. Their generosity helps support research and also brought awareness of genetic neurological diseases and the importance of screening to all their guests.

Shop ‘til You Drop – at the Umbra Warehouse Sale! Once again Umbra held a fantastic warehouse sale – make a donation, get a deal. The enthusiastic crowd of super shoppers donated $8,500 which Umbra directed to The Hospital for Sick Children in the name of Jacob’s Ladder. Thanks to our supportive friends at Umbra.

December brought Kayla’s Chanukah Concert which was a huge success. Through hard work and a terrific group of donors supporting her “Kayla Chanukah Colouring Book” Kayla made a contribution of $5,000 to Jacob’s Ladder.

Grazie, Grazie! All proceeds from the Grazie Restaurant Cookbook continue to be donated to Jacob’s Ladder.

Loot Bags and Donations in Lieu of Gifts – This year more amazing children requested donations be made to Jacob’s Ladder in lieu of birthday gifts or for loot bags in their friends’ honour. We are truly inspired by these children who think of others on their special day. To know more about these programs, please contact us at info@jacobsladder.ca or 416-485-0078.

Chocolate and Lemons, Beads and Bracelets – Sweet and sour – and oh so sweet! Let’s not forget our smallest helpers who squeezed lemons for lemon-aid, baked cookies and beaded creations for sale at their street side storefronts. These hard workers made significant donations to Jacob’s Ladder while amazing us all with their dedication. Kudos to our youngest supporters!
